Additional Information

This vacation itinerary was designed for those visitors to Costa Rica who want to explore and experience as much nature as possible and not beaches or adventure so much. The areas visited are all main destinations of our country, like Arenal Volcano which is the most popular touristic attraction of Costa Rica, the Monteverde Cloud Forest which is also a must see place, and Tortuguero National Park which is the most naturally intense destination of Costa Rica, where the jungles ca only be traveled by boat through its beautiful water canals.

This vacation starts with a stay in a hotel in the town of La Guacima called “Robledal”, which is an accommodation owned and operated by a Costa Rican family, who would be your hosts on this first day; this hotel is located away from the noise and the heavy traffic of San Jose Downtown in a more quiet area not too far from the airport.

The next morning you will be picked up to go to Monteverde, located up in the mountains of our continental divide. On the way to Monteverde we do a few interesting stops for you to see more of our country, like stopping at the largest fruit stand of Costa Rica, where you will learn about the multiple kinds of tropical fruits that we have here, and why not, maybe try some of them as part of your adventure. Continuing we stop in a very fun place where we normally see lots of white faced capuchin monkeys. This is the house of a Costa Rican lady who has the ability to call a large family of monkeys that live in the forest behind her backyard, and when the monkeys come they normally play around in the bushes and put up a show for the tourists; for some people this is the highlight of the day, as a matter of fact, we’ve had customers who have told us that they would come back to Visiting Costa Rica only to go again to that place. Continuing with the trip we start with the climb of the mountains of our continental divide until reaching Monteverde, but we stop along the way to take pictures of the beautiful Gulf of Nicoya which is very pretty to see once we are at certain elevation and to take pictures of the Monteverde Mountains that also look very pretty from the distance. Once in Santa Elena, which is the name of the main town of Monteverde, we go to have lunch to the most delicious typical restaurant of the area, here you would have a taste of our Costa Rican traditional cuisine. After lunch, we would take you to do the Best Hanging Bridges Hike in all Costa Rica at the Selvatura Park. Selvatura is the best option in Costa Rica for a hanging bridges tour because the bridges are very wide and very strong, making this walk a pleasant experience and a great place to take pictures of the ample views, this facility has the widest and most ample views of any other hanging bridges park of the country. The trails at Selvatura are very nice also, always well maintained, easy to walk on and the forest around them is very lush and beautiful, quite a natural experience not to be missed… At the end of this 2-3 hour hike, you would enjoy of Selvatura’s Hummingbird Gallery, which is the biggest and nicest of Costa Rica.

Once we finish in Selvatura Park, we would take you to the Fonda Vela Hotel, this is one of our favorite hotels in Monteverde because is a little apart from the town, giving you the feeling that you are immersed in the Cloud Forest. Fonda Vela has a large property with lots of beautiful tropical gardens, gorgeous nature trails and great views of the Cloud Forest Reserves; the rooms at this hotel are nice and comfortable and its restaurant is the most charming of Monteverde to our opinion… At the end of this fun day you would go to have another unique experience at the Cloud Forest Night Walk. There are many night walks offered in Monteverde, but the truth is that we’ve never seen any wild animals on any of them, but the place where we would take you always has many interesting animals that show their faces. Of course we cannot promise that you will see wild animals every time because this is a natural habitat and not a zoo, but the difference between this place and the others is that it is not open to the general public during the day, so the animals feel comfortable spending the day here and when the evening comes for the night tour, there are normally many of them in this forest, some very difficult to see in the wild. The walk is done at a slow pace and it lasts about 2 hours approx.

On the third day of this Costa Rica Rainforest Vacation we would take you to the most visited and popular destination called Arenal Volcano. The trip starts by driving down from the Monteverde Mountains to the Arenal Lake, and once you get to this lake you would get on a boat to cross it; the views of the volcano, the mountains and the forests are spectacular from the Arenal Lake on clear days. After crossing the lake you would take a short drive to the Lomas del Volcan Hotel where you would spend three nights. Lomas del Volcan is a great lodging option in Arenal, the property is very big all covered with beautiful tropical gardens, the rooms are nicely spaced out from each other, the forest surrounding it gives it a very fresh feel and the views of the volcano are the best you could have, since the volcano is literally the backyard of this hotel! We highly recommend getting a table for your breakfast or lunch close to the terrace, the feeling of having your coffee in the morning with the view of this volcano is one of the most relaxing experiences we can recommend there…

On the following day of your Costa Rica Rainforest trip you would hike on the large lava flow of Arenal Volcano from the big eruption in the year 1,968, which is also the closest look-out point; since there are no trails or roads that go up to the summit of this mountain. On this excursion you would learn about the history and interesting facts of Arenal Volcano, as well as seeing the beautiful landscapes of this low lands region. After this volcano experience you will visit Paradise Hot Springs and Gardens, where you will relax in the thermal mineral waters for the rest of the afternoon-evening. Visiting one of the Arenal Hot Springs is one of the must do things when traveling in this region. As helpful information, we don’t include the transportation back to your hotel because we don’t want to limit the time that you want to be there, whether is a little while or the whole evening; for some people 30 minutes in the hot springs is enough, but for other 4 hours is not enough time, that’s why we prefer for each individual to dictate the time spent there. The people at the reception of Paradise Hot Springs will be happy to call a taxi cab for you.

On the following day of your vacation you will go to La Fortuna Waterfall, the most famous of Costa Rica, this is the waterfall used on most of the advertising of our country as a natural touristic destination. La Fortuna Waterfall is a large park immersed in the beautiful rainforest of the Arenal area, where you would have to go down 400-500 steps to get to it, it normally takes 15 to 20 minutes to go all the way down. Once at the waterfall you can opt to swim at the pool underneath the fall which is very powerful, or you can also swim in one of the calm natural pools further down the river.

After the trip to La Fortuna Waterfall you would go back to your hotel for a while, and then in the afternoon you will participate of the chocolate tour, a very interesting activity where you will learn everything about the history and uses of cocoa in ancient times, all the way back to thousands of years ago when our natives learned that it was edible. On this tour you would also learn the large process that the cocoa has to go through to be transformed into chocolate, and all the uses and benefits that we obtain from it nowadays.

On the 6th day of this Costa Rica Rainforest trip we will pick you up in the morning and take you to a town called Guapiles, where you would have breakfast before boarding a bus that will take you in a 1 hour drive until you reach the dock for the boats that go on the Tortuguero Canals. From the time you get on this boat the Tortuguero experience starts. The beauty of the rainforests on the river sides is impressive, as a matter of fact, we can confidently say that these are the most dense and lush rainforests of our country; and definitely the Best place to Observe Wildlife in Costa Rica. Once in Tortuguero you will check-in at Mawamba Lodge, we consider Mawamba as the best hotel in Tortuguero because is located next to the beach and next to the main canal, which provides the option of spending time at the grounds of the hotel or the beach that is steps away. Most of the nice hotels in this area are located on the other side of the main canal, where the visitors have to take a boat ride every time they wish to go to the beach or the Tortuguero Town. As part of this day you would also be taken to visit the small town of Tortuguero, where you will learn a little bit about the history of this Caribbean Town of Costa Rica.

On the following morning of your trip you will participate of a walk at Mawamba Park, where you will learn about the rainforest vegetation of Costa Rica. Then in the afternoon you will do the Tortuguero Canals tour, where your naturalist guide will be searching for different forms of wildlife and will also be explaining aspects of this magnificent eco-system. This is a very different natural experience than the ones you would have in the rest of Costa Rica, because it will give you the feeling that you are in a remote place sort of like the Amazon Jungle, away from all civilization...

The next morning you will have breakfast and will be transferred to San Jose, where you would spend the last night in our country at the Bougainvillea Hotel. This hotel is a great choice because its gardens have been rated as the most beautiful for a hotel in Costa Rica, the quality of it is very good and the views of the surrounding areas are very nice too. On the following day we would take you to the San Jose International Airport for your flight back home.
